Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is the name of a non-profit charitable organization. The mission of QOV is to cover members and veterans of the US Armed Services who have been touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. (p. 6)
The first QOV was awarded in November 2003 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. (WRAMC) to a young soldier from Minnesota who lost his leg in Iraq. (p. 40) Since the inception of presenting quilts to veterans, over 400,000 quilts have been given to veterans who have been touched by war. These quilts are expressions of gratitude meant to thank and comfort. The Quilt of Valor unequivocally says thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation. (p. 42)
Piecemakers Guild of Central Wisconsin supports QOV by creating quilts. The guild works with the QOV national organization to nominate veterans. Once a veteran’s nomination is received, the national organization sends the information to a local member of the QOVF. A quilt is presented to the veteran in a ceremony honoring the veteran.
